The Distant Early Warning Line (DEW Line) site in Barrow, part of a string of long-range radar installations installed in the 1950s that stretched from northwestern Alaska all across northern Canada and into northern Greenland. Meant to provide early warning of a trans-polar attack by the Soviets, the line remains active in a reduced capacity as the Northern Warning System.
