I started day 3 by heading up to Mahogany Flat, in the mountains just to the west of Death Valley. Here you're looking through the twisted trees that grow up there, down into the valley. At 8200 feet (2500 m), it was almost chilly up here, around 68°F (20°C); about an hour later I had reached the valley floor, and the temperature was up to 105°F (40°C).
