Looking back over at Porto, from Vila Nova de Gaia. The bridge has two decks because both cities are built on steep hills. To get from the bottom deck on the Porto side to the top deck, you simply walk up 212 old stone stairs, which lead to a short uphill walk to the top of the bridge and the cathedral. There are even houses half way up the stairs.
