Before we got to the sea ice, the oceanographers and biologists were busy working in the open water. This is one of the oceanographers' main instruments, a CTD, being lowered into the water. It measures the water temperature and salinity, and takes water samples, all the way down to the bottom, sometimes more than 3000 m (2 miles) below, on this trip.
