The red line on the computer screen shows our track one evening after the captain had had one too many. Actually, we were trying to recover a set of instruments that was anchored to the ocean bottom the year before, and we had to get in position directly over them, with open water around for them to float up into when released (and not get stuck under ice where they can't be found). So, we had to sail in circles a lot trying to get the right position and conditions. Eventually we got the instruments successfully.
