The old pieces were quite safe to work on, but the new ice was thin, soft, and not very secure. At first we worked with a rope tied to whomever was on the thin ice. After it was clear that it was usually able to support a person we did away with the rope, but we still carried spikes hanging around our necks, so we could climb out when we fell through.
