We used this advanced scientific device to push the instrument in the previous photo far under the ice, allowing us to measure the amount of light transmitted through the ice at many points along a profile. It's 3 long, thin, wooden boards taped together into one 40-foot, 12-m, long flexible piece that can push something along under the ice.
