  • Ny Ålesund—the town

Previous photo

A train left behind from the mining days. Ny Ålesund was built as a coal mining town in 1916 and the mines were the reason people lived there from then until mining was stopped in 1963, after a series of accidents. After the War, into the 1950s, Ny Ålesund was a 'normal' town, with a population over 200 at times, including families with children.
