Aya Sofya, or Hagia Sofia, may be Istanbul's most famous attraction. Built as a cathedral in the 530s, it remained the largest cathedral ever constructed for nearly 1000 years, until 1520. In 1453 it was converted to a mosque, and then to a museum in 1935.
