A view of the mountains north of Erzurum from the city's fortress. The city is on high plains at the edge of the mountains, at 1850 m (6070 feet). The elevation meant it was cooler than other areas nearby and got cold at night, dropping to near freezing on the clear September nights I was there. Winters are quite harsh in the area.
