Not far from Kars, right on the Armenian border, is the abandoned city of Ani. Once the capital of the Armenian kingdom, with a population of 100,000, it was mostly abanoned after wars and major earthquakes in the 1300s, and the buildings have been left on their own since. Today, only the stone structures survive, but it's stunning, like coming across an ancient city in the middle of the plains of Montana.
