South of Şanlıurfa, very close to Syria, lies the ancient city of Harran, mentioned by name in the Book of Genesis. It was once a major city; its most famous resident, Abraham, lived here for a few years around 1900 BC. Today it's only a small village, but it remains one of the oldest continuously inhabited places on Earth (the citadel in Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, is generally granted that title). This is part of the fortress, which mostly dates from the mid 11th century.
