Also south of Van is Chavushtepe, the remains of a fortress-palace that was home to the kings of the ancient Urartian civilization. Built in the mid 700s BC, the foundatians and underground storage areas remain, having been unearthed by a local archaeologist who, now retired, was at the site, as he often is, to tell people about it.
