I met these two my first night in Dohuk. The guy on the right heard I was living in Norway and was excited to tell me his daughter lives in Oslo. He lives part-time in the Netherlands and spoke some English, but he would also sometimes call his daughter (as he's doing here, during lunch) so we could talk in Norwegian and she could translate to Kurdish. He is originally from Amadiya and offered to take me there after I said I was planning to visit the town. Many Iraqi Kurds fled during Saddam's time, with a lot of them seeking asylum in Scandinavia, making Norwegian a surprisingly useful language in the area.
