Saint Matthew's (Mar Mattai in Syriac), an Assyrian monastery south of Dohuk was founded in the year 363. Restored since 2003, it receives many Christian pilgrims from the region, as well as Christians fleeing violence in Mosul and other southern Iraqi cities.
